The machine is carried – trailed by the tractor by means of three point linkage; it cuts, triturates and crumbles residual parts of other processing, such as corn-stalks and wine-shoots in order to grant a faster decomposition and an easy and profitable interring.
These machines are divided in two categories depending on the work width; with mono and birotor.
1) Monorotor machine, most used with work width from 0.8 mt up to 3.2 mt, transmission occurs through a cardan shaft, a multiplier gearbox and a side transmission which is generally carried out with trapezoidal belts. It can be for finishing work or medium or heavy work; the structure of the machine is different as well as the configuration of the tools.
2) Birotor machine, most used with work width from 0.8 mt up to 3.2 mt up to 6 mt, transmission occurs through a cardan shaft, a multiplier gearbox with through-shaft in order to carry out a double side transmission compared with the two horizotal rotors by means of a cardan joint and trapezoidal belts.
On average the horizontal hammer-holding rotor turns at 1500 – 1800 rev. per minute and generally against the tractor running direction with average tip speed 40/60 m/sec. Hammers have different shapes depending on the type and kind of work that has to be carried out.

On some gearboxes the pumps drive system are available in order to operate the machine hydraulic services.
Some gearboxes are equipped with inside overrunning system carried out on the crown; the free wheel is important on heavy machines (big inertial mass on the rotors) in order to avoid vibration or dangerous stress when the machine stop or with suddenly deceleration of the P.T.O.
